the island…

July 26, 2005

went to see “the island” despite the fact it’s directed by michael bay… just because ewan mcgregor and scarlett johansson and i had to get away from thinking about things… and the result was a bit better than i expected… yet it could have been better…
it has a little bit of “ghost in the shell”, “blade runner”, “dark city” and “matrix” but with typical horrible hollywood ending… too bad since the beginning premise somewhat looked interesting… the first hour or so when it’s set inside the “factory”, it’s quite fun except all that dumb product placements… all the brands you see through out the movie makes you feel really sad… along with the fact that they show you commercials these days before the previews at the theater…
well, then after they break out from the factory and enter the “real world” LA set in 2019 (?), it religiously follows the formular of how to be qualified to be called “summer blockbuster”… you start to wonder how come the main characters haven’t died yet… and have so few scars considering that they have been dangling on top of a building logo outside a sky scraper, 70 floors up… of course when they fall, there’s a convenient safety net for them…
yet it wasn’t too bad since i didn’t want to think too much… but then they had to do it…
turn it into a real heroic human triumphant movie… (wait, they are clones… ah, i get it…)
basically the last 20 minutes of the movie sucks… i started to feel embarrassed that i was in the theater… and the music got worse and worse… there ought to be a law that if a film composer wants to use a choir, they need to get a permission first… and basically never let them… it was 100 times worse than hans zimmer’s worst score…
well…
still i liked scarlett johansson and ewan mcgregor… even though there weren’t all that much for them to really act but they did pretty well… and djimon hounsou was great as humane bounty hunter…
so there you go… i warned you about the last 20 minutes… except that, if you need a mind numbing movie for the summer, why not…
