bill murray… he’s an enigma…

watched the movie in almost sold out theater… for wednesday night after 10 pm show, pretty impressive… then my irritation grew as the movie started… for the first half an hour, at every single thing bill murray said, bill murray did, everybody (except me and some other people i’m sure) was laughing… even when he says simple yes or no, people were laughing… why…? because it was “supposed” to be funny…? just because it was bill murray…? i was getting so annoyed that people are not seeing his subtle gestures that convey his loneliness… yes, he’s funny doing very very little things… but they are not loud-laughing-funny… they are just funny… makes you smile… makes you feel warm inside… and sad at the same time…
anyway… going back to the movie…
this was another beautiful and subtle movies that only could have come out in america… the kind of movie makes american film making still special… in the same tradition as in lost in translation or girl with a pearl earring or even mysterious skin… they don’t sell you what to feel… most times they don’t even give you enough clues for you to figure out how to feel or what to feel right away… yet you notice that emotional reaction going on inside you while you are watching the screen… and after you leave the theater, you keep that feeling and maybe one day, you’ll be able to put finger on it… and figure out what that might have been…
i didn’t grow up watching bill murray (thankfully in this case) so i don’t have this urge to laugh at every little thing he does… but i notice how subtle his eyes moves, how he looks at things without saying anything yet be able to make you guess what he might be feeling and how funny he is doing such a little gestures… he is just fantastic… and he definitely know how to play a lonely guy… but not miserable… more of a guy who is aware of his loneliness…
the movie is a road movie filled with many many beautiful shots… and good actors throughout… also the songs are used very nicely… i’m glad that jim jarmusch somehow figured out the way to bring ethiopian jazz music… which many of my friends had turned me on to a few years back…
i might want to go back when there won’t be so many people with damn popcorn thinking they are in for a funny-ha-ha-movie…

  1. I love Bill Murray. He can convey more in a glance than most actors can in an entire scene. Those sad eyes …When I saw this film, two women talked all through it, and then were angry at the end because “we sat here two hours and were not going to find out what happens?’ I think I’ll wait and see it the second time on dvd.

  2. yes, bill murray has one of the most expressive eyes i’ve even seen on the screen… the best moment about this movie wass at the end when you see him standing on the street, you don’t know exactly what he’s thinking but you can “feel” it… one of the reasons why “lost in traslation” didn’t become another dumb hipster movie about japan was his eyes… the way he looks into camera… or looking at whatever…so funny that many people are so used to the same old formular of hollywood movie storytelling, they are not able to appreciate the movie itself… this movie was worth watching for me because i really start to care for bill murray’s character… not what happend to him but himself…oh, well… these days i’m a bit more reluctant to go to see a movie at a theater because there’s always someone ruins your experience… when i went to see sin city, there were many people making so many comments through out the movie and it was sooooo annoying… ah yah…
